Big Hammock WMA

Jesup, Georgia Altamaha River Region

Big Hammock WMA, Adjacent Beasley Memorial Bridge, GA Hwys 121/169/144
Big Hammock WMA in Tattnall County encompasses almost 7,000 acres, primarily a flood plain habitat with some adjacent uplands. 11 pristine miles of Altamaha riverfront in this state owned property include the mouth of the Ohoopee River as well. Habitat populations are found to be mostly hardwoods, with about 10% in natural pines. Birding is excellent: look for Mississippi kite, swallow-tailed kite, osprey, wood ducks, white ibis, common egret, great blue heron, anhinga, and numerous songbirds. Let us know what you see! Also watch for gopher tortoises and indigo snakes! Throughout this managed wildlife area here are numerous unpaved ramps to access the river, some gravelled and at least one is paved, upriver from the bridge.

Williamsburg Landing, Off Hwy 341 near Mt. Pleasant
In northeast Wayne County the Sansavilla WMA stretches along both sides of Hwy 341. The state has developed a facility about 7 miles from the highway near Mt. Pleasant at Williamsburg Landing, with a ramp, picnic area and parking. Williamsburg was the first incorporated town in Wayne County, the first settlement to be surveyed and laid out in named streets. As you can see from this point on the river, the high bluffs extend for several miles along Sansavilla Ridge, just a short distance from the flat expansive Marshes of Glynn.
